Museum Accessibility Guide

The Erie Maritime Museum and U.S. Brig NIAGARA welcomes ALL visitors and seeks to provide reasonable accommodations for those in need of special assistance.


Welcome to the Erie Maritime Museum and U.S. Brig NIAGARA. Located in the heart of Erie’s Historic Bayfront District, the museum shares a residence with the Raymond M. Blasco, MD Memorial Library – just off the Bayfront Parkway and a short drive from all major Northwestern Pennsylvania highways.


There are two parking areas which museum visitors may use: the south lot along Front Street and the east lot off Holland Street. For those using the south lot, simply travel through the parking lot and cross at Front Street. From here, you will end up at the front of the building. For guests parking in the east lot, cross Holland Street and proceed around the side of the building and toward the entrances.


Handicap parking is available to visitors with handicap placards and are located in the south parking area. A semi-circle drop-off/pick-up zone is also available at the front of the building.


As this is a shared building, there are two entrances available to visitors. The building has two sliding-glass automatic doors to choose from. Once inside the lobby, locate the MUSEUM STORE – this is how patrons gain entry. For any questions, please contact our Museum Store at (814)452-2744 ext. 208.


SERVICE and EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMALS are permitted in the museum and NIAGARA/LETTIE G. HOWARD. This includes animals in training, in accordance to federal and state policies. Approval for entry is at the discretion of museum staff.


The Erie Maritime Museum and U.S. Brig NIAGARA is an active participant in the MUSEUMS FOR ALL program, and as such, discounted admission ($2 per person) is available for any visitor who has an ACCESS or EBT card and a valid state ID.

The museum is also a member of the BLUE STAR MUSEUM PROGRAM, in collaboration with the National Endowment of the Arts. We offer FREE admission to active duty and reserve military personnel and/or their families. A valid military ID is required.


The museum is a 12,000 square foot facility, encompassing a two-story gallery space. In addition to our museum, two historic sailing vessels, located on an outdoor plaza, are also available for tours when in port. The entirety of the exhibit space is handicap and wheelchair accessible with the majority of our exhibits and interactive displays being ADA compliant.

An ELEVATOR is located at the southwest corner of the gallery, our museum docents or staff can provide directions to patrons with questions on how to find the elevator.

RAMPS are located in two locations on the first floor of the building.

RESTROOMS are located in the building’s lobby outside the Museum Store. Return outside of the museum on the north end of the Lobby to use the restrooms.


You may tour NIAGARA and LETTIE G. HOWARD however; all patrons must be accompanied by museum staff or volunteers. Please note – these are historic sailing vessels with limited accessibility however, we strive to make accommodations for anyone who wishes to tour. Guided tours of the museum and ships are available via one of our museum volunteers. Tours of the ships typically depart every thirty minutes depending on the number of visitors in the museum. For questions, please contact museum staff.


Complimentary WHEELCHAIRS are available for use. Request them at the Museum Store, free of charge.

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Erie Maritime Museum have partnered with the AIRA to provide visitors with visual impairments with a new way to experience our museum, utilizing your smartphone or smart glasses. Downloaded via the AppStore or Google Play Store, the AIRA app connects you with a live agent, allowing you to navigate, read labels, experience interactives and so much more. Guests with special requirements are encouraged to contact the museum in advance to make arrangements to accommodate their needs.
