Erie Gives Day 2018
The Flagship Niagara League had over 100 donors support us on Erie Gives Day and we can’t thank you enough!
For over 200 years, the U.S. Brig Niagara has been a majestic symbol of Erie. Since her resurrection, she is nationally celebrated as a model of education under sail. The Flagship Niagara League is currently striving to grow educational sail training programming which has been expanded with the addition of Erie’s newest vessel, the Lettie G. Howard.
Lettie G. Howard is owned by the South Street Seaport Museum and is operated as a programmatic collaboration between the South Street Seaport Museum and the Flagship Niagara League. Not only is Lettie able to expand visitor services at the Erie Maritime Museum, but she also provides the opportunity for the FNL to host a Tall Ship Summer Camp that gives the FNL the opportunity to engage a younger demographic to the golden age of sail.
Setting their sights on the future, the FNL hopes to launch Tall Ship Academy: A Semester Aboard program in 2019 on Lettie. This program designated for high school students allows them to embark on a semester long journey down the Atlantic Coast. Students sailing these historic ships are quickly immersed in an environment where it is mandatory that they function as part of a team, as well as learning the value of structure and discipline while seeing a world that is wider than they can imagine. Educators onboard these vessels strive to engage trainees not only in the skills necessary to maneuver a historic tall ship, but also the history and environmental science of the Great Lakes and beyond, into an industry that is very much thriving.
The Flagship Niagara League is a 501(c)3, non-profit educational associate organization of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The FNL was chartered in 1982 to facilitate citizen participation and operation of the U.S. Brig Niagara and its homeport, the Erie Maritime Museum. The Erie Maritime Museum and the U.S. Brig Niagara educate the public regarding the region’s maritime heritage, the War of 1812 in Lake Erie including the building of Oliver Hazard Perry’s fleet and the experience of the U.S. Brig Niagara under sail.
All tax-deductible donations of $25 of more raised through Erie Gives on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 from 8a – 8p will go towards supporting the Flagship Niagara League’s efforts of bringing their brand of sail training beyond the Great Lakes and into the Atlantic Ocean.
