USS Michigan was the first iron-hulled ship in the US Navy. A technological pioneer that stood the test of time, her 79-year operational career is the longest of any powered US Naval vessel.
In addition to a comprehensive selection of artifacts, the Erie Maritime Museum’s newest permanent exhibit includes an interactive kiosk, where you can hear the ship’s bells and historic bugle calls, as well as look up the names of the crew who served on this vessel. The kiosk is loaded with additional information about shipboard life and technical details.
Explore her long history, meet some of the men who commanded her and her crew and see what remains of The Iron Steamer.
